How to Talk to Your Doctor About Weight Without the Anxiety

September 29, 2025

Look, I get it. Talking to your doctor about weight can be anxiety-inducing. Maybe you’ve been there before. You found yourself sitting in that paper gown, feeling exposed and vulnerable, and wondering if you’re going to receive “the lecture” again.

You’re definitely not alone in feeling this way. So many of my patients have shared stories about feeling judged, dismissed, or reduced to just a number on a scale. It pains me deeply because healthcare should never be perceived in such a manner.

Here at NiuOla Health, we do things differently. I’ll show you how to talk about this without fear, guilt, or shame.

At our clinic in Olympia, Dr. Tui Lauilefue and NiuOla Health team approach every conversation with genuine respect. We’re not here to shame anyone or hand out cookie-cutter advice. We’re here to listen—really listen—and meet you exactly where you are.

Whether you want to talk about weight loss, focus on feeling more energetic, manage a health condition, or explore your relationship with food, we’re in your corner. If you prefer not to discuss weight at all, that’s perfectly okay too.

Getting Ready for the Conversation

Prior to your appointment, please take a few moments to consider what you hope to achieve from this discussion. Write down your thoughts if it helps.

Common Questions to Consider

  • Could my weight be connected to why my knees hurt so much?
  • I’m always exhausted—is there a connection here?
  • Can we focus on my health without making it all about the scale?

Bring Support if Needed

If you want to bring someone with you for support, please do. Do whatever makes you feel more comfortable and confident.
